Our Journey

Sweet Revelations was founded by Rachel Faitala-Malae and is based in Dunedin, New Zealand. Opening in 2022, Sweet Revelations started out as a micro-bakery, offering Triple Chocolate Brownies and Paifala (pineapple pies). Rachel has crafted many celebration cakes, cupcakes, and cookies, establishing herself as the go-to "brownie lady" in her community.

While the dedicated catering side officially launched a couple of years down the track, the cogs were always turning toward it. As the Pasifika population in Dunedin grows and more community events and milestones are celebrated, there has been a vital demand for authentic home-comfort food. Today, Sweet Revelations proudly stands as a leading independent Pasifika caterer in the region, bringing traditional dishes like sapa-sui, talo, pani-popo, takihi, and palusami to tables across the city.

As our reputation has grown, we are deeply honoured to be the trusted Pasifika catering vendor for many of Dunedin's key institutions, including the University of Otago & Otago Polytechnic, Otago Museum, Dunedin City Council (DCC), Oranga Tamariki, and WellSouth.

Our Philosophy

Operating from our DCC-registered home kitchen in Dunedin, we balance our work and family life alongside Kalani (our kitchen support) and our five children. We have integrated unique family care values into the business, including positivity, kindness, and community, which form our absolute foundation.

Beyond the kitchen, Rachel has stepped into a new role as a business mentor for the Pacific Island community in Dunedin. Blending business consultancy with traditional Pasifika ways of life and a strong focus on mental health and well-being, she is passionate about walking alongside others and encouraging more Pasifika people to step into the food and hospitality industry to grow it together.

The business began by offering pre-orders to bring baked treats to the community, attending local markets, and building a loyal following online. From streamlining our menu to focus entirely on bespoke custom bakes and large-scale catering, every twist and turn has been part of the bigger picture. Our ultimate dream—one that Rachel and Kalani are actively working towards alongside family, friends, and our amazing community—is to open our own catering restaurant. As we continue to grow and share our journey, we love taking you with us through the gains, struggles, and successes that have shaped our story.
